My Internet empire has just gotten one domain name larger. I am now the proud owner of gothicsurfers.com. Hopefully I’ll figure out something to do with it. Ideally, I think I want to use it as a repository for my weirdness (separate from my blog). So go check it out, and consider the new A Capella version of NUOF posted there a welcome gift from me to you.

On the election… |

It’s so weird to actually feel good on the night of a Presidential election. Tomorrow we’ll get back to business as usual, but just for tonight, I want to stop being cynical and enjoy what just happened. Tonight the world seems like a friendlier place, and while I don’t think it will stay that way for long, I’m glad I’m experiencing it.

I just hope our new President doesn’t fuck things up any worse.

Pi Day |

As you know probably know, today is pi day (March 14, 3/14, 3.14…). Oddly enough, when I drove by the gas station earlier, the price of gas was three dollars and fourteen cents. Was that just an eerie coincidence or is there some kind of greater pi conspiracy?

I’m testing the wordpress client on my new Nokia n800 internet tablet. It is basically a handheld Linix computer with wifi access. I like the overall interface of the device, but typing on the touch screen keyboard will take a bit of getting used to. It is very easy to make little mistakes when there is no tactile response to a key press. Hopefully it is just a learning curve issue, but I doubt I’ll ever be super accurate since my thumbs are rather clumsy. I guess I could get a bluetooth keyboard, but I think that would defeat the purpose. I’m hoping this will eventually be a boon to my blog, since theoretically I can use this thing to write from anywhere, but who knows? For the time being though, it is a fun gadget. I’ll keep you updated on my progress (whether you care or not!).

FuckHuckabee |

(First of all, I’d like to apologize for the title, but it pretty much wrote itself. I had next to nothing to do with it.)
I don’t follow politics as much as I used to. I find myself running low on both time and idealism. And frankly, the 2008 election has been pretty boring thus far. My attitude has been: As long as Bush is gone, I’ll be happy. Yesterday, though, I heard something that should scare us all out of our apathy (at least, temporarily). In a recent speech, Mike Huckabee said:
“[Some of my opponents] do not want to change the Constitution, but I believe it’s a lot easier to change the constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God, and that’s what we need to do is to amend the Constitution so it’s in God’s standards rather than try to change God’s standards.”
Obviously this is a desperate plea for some last minute fundamentalist Christian votes, but it is no less scary. Huckabee is proposing rewriting the constitution to match religious doctrine. Not to be too glib about it, but I’ll venture a guess that the founding fathers might have objected to that…
Just remember kids: Huckabee = Theocracee [editor's note: I wrote that clever slogan, but I was not the only one. A google search has revealed that other people are similarly clever.]

Happy 2008! |

As you might’ve noticed, I haven’t posted for a couple weeks. My initial instinct is to apologize for the delay, but screw that noise! First of all, I doubt very many people are anxiously awaiting another post from me. I imagine friends and family might casually stop by every now and then to see what I’ve written, but no one has told me “Dave, I’ve missed the wit and wisdom of your blog” (If they had, I might’ve posted sooner). Second, I have no posting schedule and make no promises to post regularly. I try to post as often as I can, but sometimes I just don’t have much to say.
New Year’s Resolution
Every year I try to make a new year’s resolution, and it is usually something lame. Like I’ll say “I will try not to procrastinate” or something stupid like that. This year I picked something more concrete. I’ve resolved to travel somewhere I’ve never been. At least, that’s my excuse for going to London. I am still in the theoretical stages of planning, but hopefully I’ll be going at the end of March or April.
New videos coming eventually!

My Weekend |

Netflix has a feature where you can stream a selection of movies and TV shows directly from their web site. They have a lot of classic films like Casablanca and Dr. Zhivago, which I’ve always meant to watch. They also have all of the seasons of Saved By The Bell. Long story short, right now I am watching the episode where they do the fake “rockumentary” on the band “Zack Attack.” It is looking like a very Bayside kinda weekend….

Grocery "Store"ies |

I was at Kroger a few days ago and saw that they had strawberry flavored Whopper’s (malted milk balls). I had never seen this particular variety of Whoppers before, so I was excited to buy a box. Unfortunately though, they only sold them in big cartons (rather than the smaller boxes), and I am not willing to risk buying a jumbo size box of an untested flavor of Whoppers. So, alas, I still have not tried them.
